Ten bedrooms in a two-storey timber and galvanised steel building on 22 acres of rainforest at Ewingsdale, a few minutes inland from Byron Bay. Soma was built by Vedic meditation teacher Gary Gorrow with his brother George and Balinese architect Rieky Sunur, and it now runs its retreats in partnership with Lorna Jane. The defining move is glass. Floor-to-ceiling walls of it frame the rainforest from every communal space, so daylight and outlook are the architecture rather than a feature of it. A building this thoroughly documented is rare at this scale, and it is why the record here reads stronger than most retreats twice its size.

The dome

A walk through a bamboo forest ends at a 100 square metre geodesic dome with glass ceilings and underfloor heating, where the meditation and yoga programme runs. Practice happens under sky, ringed by mature bamboo. It is a purpose-built structure with its dimensions on the record, which matters here: a published number is the difference between a space you can verify and a space you have to take on trust.

What is named and what is not

The structure is named down to its materials: timber, galvanised steel, poured concrete flecked with local sand. The things that touch you are not. The fabrics are described as open-weave and natural without a fibre or certification, the infinity pool is freshwater without a treatment method, and the syntropic garden is a named practice without an area or a share of the kitchen. The pattern across this property is a strong skeleton and unpublished skin, and every one of those gaps is a document away from closed.

What is not publishedthe gaps we looked for and did not find

The architecture is unusually well documented for a retreat this size, and the measurements behind it are not documented at all. No ventilation rate, filtration grade or air measurement is published for the sealed, glazed interiors. The pool is described as freshwater with no treatment method or test panel behind the word. Daylight is clearly a design principle, but no artificial lighting specification, colour temperature or blackout provision is published. Nothing is published on wireless topology or the electromagnetic environment, in either direction. The structural materials are named while the finishes that touch skin are not: no mattress composition, no textile certification, no cleaning chemistry. The organic syntropic garden is named as a practice without an area, yield or share of the kitchen. Sound has nothing published at all, despite a rainforest site that likely performs well. Note also that the operating identity changed: the retreat now trades in partnership with Lorna Jane, and the design evidence cited here describes the property as built under its founder, which no source published since contradicts.

Not published is not unsafehow to read these scores, and what this index does not promise

A low score means a property has not published information. It does not mean the property is unsafe, unhealthy or poorly run.

These scores measure disclosure. These scores describe disclosure, not property quality. This index has no commercial relationship with the properties listed unless a badge on the listing says otherwise.

Conditions change, and we will not always know. Every record is a snapshot of what a property had published when we read it, and that date is on the page. Conditions change: a property can refit, change suppliers or replace a system at any time, and nothing requires it to tell us. We re-read records and ask properties directly for updates, but there will always be a gap between what is true today and what was published when we looked. Use this as a frame of reference for what to ask, not as a substitute for asking. Take your own questions to the property before you book, and tell us if you find something we have wrong.

We report what properties publish. We do not inspect, certify or vouch for any property on this index unless a listing says we assessed it on site, and we accept no responsibility for decisions made or outcomes experienced on the basis of what you read here.
